As the Vikings close in, Brendan ventures into the surrounding forest and prepares to confront his darkest fears. The book must be finished, but accomplishing that mission will be no simple task. When the mysterious Brother Aidan arrives at the abbey carrying an unfinished tome filled mystical secrets, Brendan becomes illuminated, and his dormant talents are awakened. Along with his uncle, Abbot Cellach, Brendan labors to fortify the abbey walls daily so his people will be protected from invading forces. Brendan lives in a heavily fortified medieval outpost known as the Abbey of Kells, where the ongoing threat of Viking raids causes the peaceful monks to live in a state of constant fear.

  • Follow 12-year-old Brendan (voice of Evan McGuire) as he battles Vikings and confronts an ancient serpent god on a mission to locate a legendary crystal and complete the mythical Book of Kells.
  • Like others, I sympathised hugely with the uncle who was the one making real sacrifices. It just didn’t work for me as a story, at least not with the note it ended on. It’s trying to tell the story of a real book but doesn’t tell you this, so unless you already knew in advance of the film you don’t realise that the story isn’t about the boy, the wall, the uncle, the fairy or the illuminator, but about the book, and everyone in the film is expendable because the survival of the book is the real triumph. Fuck? It’s like the money runs out and the third act is trimmed back to almost nothing. Never mind all those dead people, eh? Book got finished. Finally we see the despair of a man whose only concern was protecting his family (and what a powerful scene that was) but then we rush through a montage, the boy returns and it’s all hooray hurrah and the mystical spirit is sort of brushed to one side. So now we see it’s about him drifting away from his uncle and trusting to the power of hope™. stream 4 secret of kells playlists including Aisling, Jillian Aversa, and The Secret of Kells music from your desktop or mobile device. At first we think it will be his adventures with the fairy, but that never really goes anywhere, she seems to exist only to evoke a feeling of magic and old worldness. We’re shown a conflict between the man with practical concerns and the child who has no knowledge of the outside world and their imagination has been unlocked. The art was beautiful and the music evocative, but it never really delivers on the story. Anyway, it’s a really good work of historical fantasy and animation. There were some quibbles I had with it, but they are of a really spoilery nature. (Though that would be a pretty cool sequel if the characters from Kells and HTTYD met up.) Billy West as Stimpy/The Animal God of Kells Neil Riley as Julian/Messanger of Kells Jeff Bennett as Bud/Stereo/Raj/Hubie and Bertie Damon Jones as Bud (Singing)/Fox Demon Kells Needs a Hero (Prologue) - The Animal God of Kells, Fox Demon. At no point do young children tame deadly Vikings to destroy an evil Head Viking to save the day. Stimpy and The Secret Of Kells is Upcoming On 2020 TBA. It doesn’t have awesome flying scenes, but the characters are interesting, the fantasy (while still fantastic) is rooted in mythology and history, the father-son conflicts are more palatable, and the scary bits are really scary.

I thought it was three to five times better than How To Train Your Dragon. It’s loosely based on the events surrounding the real Book of Kells, a copy of the Vulgate Bible which survived many Viking attacks and somehow survived into the present. The story centers on a young monk learning the fine art of illumination when not assisting with the aforementioned wall project. The cartoony figures are combined with Mary Blair landscapes and a heavy dose of animated Insular art, which for all I know was done in Flash but it looks really nice.įrom the trailer I thought the main character was a Ponyo-esque magical girl, but the faerie-thing is definitely a supporting character. It’s a lot more like Samurai Jack, or portions of Sita Sings The Blues. The animation style took a few minutes to grow on me. Even if the northmen weren’t reaving about, there’s still scary old Celtic gods out in the wilderness. The Abbot’s most pressing need is not the preservation of old manuscripts, or even the worship of Jesus Christ, but finishing really tall fucking walls to keep the barbarians from slaughtering everybody. It’s about this kid growing up in an Irish monastery, where civilization is a hidden thing, most likely to be swept away by Vikings.
